Not long ago, the advertising business was headed toward pariah status. Ad-free streaming services like Netflix were booming and ad blockers for the web were thriving. “The way we know advertising today is dead,” warned Mastercard Chief Marketing Officer Raja Rajamannar during the ad industry’s annual festival in Cannes, France in 2019. Citing ad blockers and consumers migrating to ad-free environments, he urged fellow marketers to find new ways to reach consumers. “It’s imperative that we need to have alternative ways of showing up and generating brand awareness.”

When X Corp. Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino gathered advertisers in September at the company’s New York office, hoping to woo them back to the social-media platform, she invited a National Football League executive as a headline speaker. Having heard plenty about the risks of the platform formerly known as Twitter, from hate speech to misinformation, Yaccarino and her team have been pitching advertisers on TV-style content such as NFL game highlights—safe zones within X that can give jittery marketers a place to spend their money.

Twitter’s next CEO, Linda Yaccarino, is well-known for her tight relationship with ad agencies and her hard-nosed negotiating tactics. WSJ’s Suzanne Vranica explains what she can bring to the social media company. Photo: Charles Sykes/NBCUniversal/Getty Images (Published earlier this year)X Corp. Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino said on Wednesday the company is “just about break even” in terms of operating cash-flow and should turn a profit early next year. Yaccarino, NBCUniversal’s former ad-sales czar who joined the company, formerly called Twitter, in June, has faced questions about how much she can rebuild X’s ad business after tumult under company owner Elon Musk, who acquired the platform late last year and swiftly cut thousands of jobs, upended features like verification and loosened content-moderation policies.

The union representing movie and television writers went on strike after talks with major networks, streamers and studios ended without a deal. WSJ’s Joe Flint explains what’s at stake. Photo: Aude Guerrucci/ReutersThe writers’ strike is casting a shadow over the TV business’s annual advertising bazaar, which was already under pressure from a softening ad market and eroding television ratings. Due to concerns over picketing writers, Netflix canceled its in-person presentation to advertisers, which was scheduled to take place next week at the Netflix-owned Paris Theater near New York’s Central Park. Instead, Netflix will make its presentation—its first-ever pitch to advertisers as part of its efforts to boost its new ad-supported version—virtually.

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson calls the social-media platform the ‘last big one’ that allows free speech. Photo: Tucker CarlsonTucker Carlson ’s announcement that he is moving to Twitter isn’t getting an enthusiastic reception on Madison Avenue, as many advertisers are already skittish about spending on the Elon Musk-owned social-media platform. Mr. Carlson said Tuesday that he is launching a show on Twitter, just weeks after Fox News canceled his nightly telecast. Mr. Carlson was one of Fox’s most popular anchors, but his controversial brand of programming repelled blue-chip advertisers, and he was the target of organized advertiser boycotts.
Some customers criticized Bud Light for its recent partnership with social media star Dylan Mulvaney. Photo: Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesThe outcry over Anheuser-Busch InBev SA’s partnership with a transgender advocate could cause brands to rethink whether and how they address contentious social issues, putting in question an increasingly common strategy for marketers as they try to reach younger consumers. Anheuser-Busch’s trouble began when the world’s largest brewer enlisted social media star Dylan Mulvaney to help generate some publicity for its Bud Light beer brand during the annual March Madness college basketball tournament.
Photo: Richard Drew/Associated PressTucker Carlson still has plenty of opportunities in broadcasting despite his ouster from Fox News, media observers said, though history shows that departing star anchors have struggled to regain the influence and reach that they enjoyed at the conservative news network. “Tucker will have options, whether they’re entrepreneurial as he was before he came to Fox, or more traditional outlets,” Jonathan Klein , former president of CNN US, said in an interview. However, he “probably won’t reach the same size audience and he won’t have the same influence that he had.”
McDonald’s says its brand is strong, but its business has grown increasingly complex in recent years . McDonald ’s Corp.’s restructuring this week is reaching company wide, resulting in hundreds of layoffs and for some employees reductions in their compensation packages, according to people familiar with the matter. Job cuts and changes at the burger chain have affected employees in the U.S. and abroad, at McDonald’s Chicago headquarters and in its field offices, and across departments including marketing and operations, the people said.
